Almost any style outdoor fountain can be used as a bird bath, even if it is not designed as such. Wall and floor fountains will attract birds, even small table top models. If you place a table top fountain on a porch you'll find birds visiting if you intended them to or not. What we have here is only a small selection of classic style water fountains which may be used as a bird bath. Please visit the merchants we have listed with the fountains for a much larger variety.

Things you should consider before you buy a garden fountain if it is intended for wild birds:

Shallow. A bird bath must be shallow, no more than two inches deep. If a basin is too deep, you can always add some pretty rocks to make it the correct depth. Some people like to use decorative polished river rocks and pebbles, but keep in mind that a bird bath must be cleaned frequently and the rocks can be somewhat high maintenance. The good news is that die to the pump constantly cleaning and moving the water, a fountain bird bath does not have to be cleaned as often as a straight, non-moving water bath.

Do not rule out the millstone style or fountains with just a sheet of water running over it - birds certainly will get right in that thin sheet of water and go to town bathing. They are also just plain beautiful and perfect for a small space garden or a patio. If you intend one for a deck, be sure to check how much it weighs! Models made in cast stone or cement can weigh quite a bit. This makes them extremely durable and stable, but not always suitable for a deck. The tiny basin designs are great for drinking water, so if this is your personal taste as opposed to a full size fountain, it can be successful.

Placement is everything. Be sure to place a fountain where birds can see it and a spot that offers protection from predators. This means no shrubs that grow to the ground, or where a cat can hide. Birds also prefer bathing in sun, so chooses a sunny location. The catch is that they do not care to bathe in the wide open so the challenge is finding an area which is sunny, but also has trees or shrubs nearby where they can quickly fly off to.Birds will also use tree branches and shrubs for post bath preening and grooming, so some lower limbs on a tree are perfect, or a shrub that can not hide a predator.
